News丨The opening of the Guangming Exhibition Hall of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Biennale will take you to explore the design of the Guangming Exhibition Hall

On December 23, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong City/Architecture Biennale Guangming Exhibition Hall opened. The theme of the exhibition is “Jing Kou Revive”, which invites artists, agricultural development experts, urban research scholars, architects, civil team buildings, video workers and other teams to exhibit in literature, installations, agricultural workshops, outdoor film screenings. In the way of sound workshops, trying to find a non-economically oriented development model and the opportunity to activate the community is also an exploration of the current unknown.

The opening ceremony attracted local people and visitors from afar. The main pavilion was recognizable at a glance with its simple, light shape and modern design. The exhibition hall is surrounded by local houses, vegetable plots and green fields. Outside the exhibition hall, there are villagers who are farming in the fields, children playing, and a natural and simple rural atmosphere.

The main exhibition venue of the exhibition is designed by Cube Disign. The project is required to meet the exhibition of the Guangming Exhibition Hall of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Biennale. At the same time, it will continue to be used as the corporate exhibition hall of the Guangming Town Project of OCT. Below, we will take everyone to explore this unique exhibition hall design -

                        Planning | Hidden in residential

                        PLANNING

The project is located in the Qikou Community of Guangming New District, covering an area of 2,250 m2. On the north side of the site is a lush lychee forest, on the south side is the village road, the west side of the main entrance faces the greenway in Guangdong Province, and on the east side is the residential building. The site was originally an old brick-concrete structure. In the design concept, the architects tried to retain the old buildings and preserve the old and new connections while realizing new functions, new life and new features.

                        Floor plan

The overall planning idea is to dismantle the middle row of old houses, rebuild the existing gas station and keep the old houses on the east and west sides about 392m2, and add new buildings on this basis. The main building of the new building is located at the northwest corner of the site, and the two old buildings are connected with the new building through the corridor to form a unified whole.

Architecture | Old and new conversations

                        ARCHITECTURE

The new building pursues a modern and simple style, which is in sharp contrast with the surrounding old houses and achieves new and old symbiosis in function, space and vision. The building uses lightweight metal and transparent glass to define indoor and outdoor spaces, combined with the use of steel structures to create a light, transparent visual image. The transparent glass wall absorbs the landscape of the forest to the greatest extent, and maps the reflections of the surrounding houses, blurs the indoor and outdoor boundaries, reduces the sense of existence, and thus establishes a subtle harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment.

After the two old buildings are demolished, the remaining peripheral wall is structurally reinforced and coated with a protective agent to preserve the mottled texture of the wall. The original dilapidated concrete beam on the roof was demolished. The roof frame structure was reconstructed by steel frame and the old tile was recycled. The new and old vocabulary were rearranged and combined. The original building was given new language, new space, new functions and new vitality. New and old buildings and the environment have reached a symbiotic unity.

The door and window openings of the old buildings are still preserved to reduce damage to the original walls. The new doors and windows adopt a high-transparent ultra-white border that is not divided into pieces. The light and modern glass metal material and the mottled traces on the wall form an interesting dialogue between new and old, historical and modern.

Landscape | Old tree, old house, new scene

                        LANDSCAPE

In the landscape planning, the large banyan tree behind the site is preserved and is part of the landscape. The water feature of the atrium of the building serves as a transition between the old and new buildings and the outdoor landscape becomes the visual focus of the courtyard, attracting visitors to visit. On the day of the opening ceremony, it also became a venue for artists' artistic performances.

                        Space | Sequence fun

                        SPACE

The building's plane is not clearly defined, making the building flexible and fluid. There is no excessive decoration in the room, and the wall is only simply painted, leaving more space and focus to the exhibition itself.

Although the building area is limited, the architects open the space level by means of frame, blank, turning, etc., creating a rich spatial sequence, making it a winding path. This is also the construction method commonly used in oriental architectural design. These spaces are specially arranged to give a strong sense of overallity and rhythm.
